Quick Guide for Understanding Towing Capacity in Orlando, FL
Whether you're dreaming of pulling a pop-up camper or boat trailer throughout Orlando, you may be wondering whether or not your vehicle can actually handle it. At Greenway Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram, it's one of the most common things customers ask, and one of the most important things to get right. Here's how to do the math correctly before you hitch anything up.
Start With Your Vehicle's Towing Capacity
Every Ram 1500, Ram 2500, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Dodge Durango comes with a manufacturer-rated maximum towing capacity. You'll find this number in your Owner's Manual, on the door jamb sticker, or in the vehicle's towing guide. This figure represents the absolute maximum weight your vehicle can tow under ideal conditions with the right equipment package. Towing capacity changes based on your configuration. Engine choice, axle ratio, whether you have a towing package, and even your cab and bed length all affect the number. Two Ram 1500s sitting side by side in our lot can have meaningfully different towing ratings, so always look up your specific VIN or build, not just the model name.
Know the Weight You're Actually Pulling
The trailer or camper's weight rating on the sticker is its dry weight, which is the weight of the unit with nothing in it. Once you load it with gear, food, water, bikes, and luggage, you can easily add hundreds or even thousands of pounds. The number you need to compare against your towing capacity is the Gross Trailer Weight (GTW), which is the total weight of the trailer fully loaded. Calculating your GTW can be tricky, so don’t hesitate to use our Ask a Tech form to receive advice from our service professionals.
Don't Forget Payload and Tongue Weight
Here's where a lot of people get tripped up. Your vehicle has two separate weight limits you need to respect, which are the towing capacity and payload capacity. Payload covers everything inside and on your truck, including passengers, cargo in the bed, and critically, tongue weight. Tongue weight is the downward force the trailer's hitch point places on your vehicle, and it should be 10 to 15 percent of your total trailer weight. If your loaded camper weighs 8,000 lb., expect 800 to 1,200 lb. of tongue weight pressing down on your hitch. Add that tongue weight to everything else you're carrying for your trip to Loch Haven Park and you'll see how quickly payload capacity gets consumed. Exceeding payload capacity can cause handling problems, brake fade, and structural damage, even if you're technically within your towing limit.
Build in a Safety Margin
We always tell customers to aim to stay at or below 80 percent of their vehicles’ rated towing capacity in real-world use. Ratings are tested under controlled conditions, not in hot Florida summer conditions. Keeping a buffer protects your engine, transmission, and brakes, and gives you confidence when conditions aren't ideal. If you're finding that your current vehicle is close to its limits, our Service Department can walk you through Ram 2500 and 3500 options that offer significantly higher ratings. “ We have now bought two cars from them and both times have been amazing. The process is so much easier than some places and they work hard to help you get to a payment plan that works for you. I do want to give a shout out to Travis in finance. He’s always so helpful, kind and efficient with all the paperwork and information that comes along with it. Our salesperson Emily was also super helpful, even when we left and had a small issue she was trying to help over the phone. Thank you for the great service! Also to add my parents have bought their last 3 cars from them and have nothing but nice things to say about them. ”
